Samsung: We Aren’t Selling Updates to Carriers

A rather nasty rumor was spread through the blogosphere shortly after a random, unknown person posted this thread over at the XDA-Developers forum. According to the poster, Samsung is deliberately delaying the Android 2.2 Froyo update until carriers agree to pay for the update. We didn’t post the rumor on BriefMobile, because there was absolutely no proof it was true. Here’s an excerpt from the accuser over at XDA-Developers:
“Some of you might have noticed Verion’s Fascinate updated, but without 2.2 : This is a result of a maintenance agreement Samsung must honor combined with Verizon’s unwillingness to pay the update fees.
In short, Android 2.2 is on hold for Galaxy S phones until the U.S. carriers and Samsung reach a consensus.”
Now, it seems we have an answer to this controversial question: is Samsung selling our Android updates? The answer is no. Samsung came out today to PhoneScoop, saying:
“No. Samsung is not charging carriers for Froyo updates to Galaxy S. We hope to have more detail on status shortly. Promise!”
Guess that resolves that. Personally, I’m glad Samsung isn’t selling updates to carriers. Updates will remain free as long as this world has any bit of justice left.
