Android 2.3 Captivate Gingerbread

Now that Android 2.3 Gingerbread and the Google Nexus S are fully announced and out in the open, it’s time to get some good ‘ole theme action going on your suddenly inferior Android 2.2 device. If you’ve got a Samsung Captivate for AT&T, you’re in luck! This little write up will give you all of the tools you need to make your Android 2.2 Samsung Captivate look incredibly like Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Make sure to read the requirements below, because we don’t want anyone complaining about broken phones now, do we?

BriefMobile isn’t responsible for bricking, shattering, or anything-ing your device if you choose to follow through with this procedure. I’ve tested these procedures on Assonance v4.3, so Assonance is the recommended ROM.

Requirements

Install Gingerbread Theme

The first step to creating the ultimate Android 2.3 style on your Captivate is to install a wonderful Android 2.3 replica theme from gtg465x over at the XDA forums. This theme will do almost all of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread styling. It only works on your Android 2.2 JK3-based or JPU-based ROMs for the AT&T Samsung Captivate.

  1. If you have a JK3-based ROM, download this .zip
If you have a JPU-based ROM, download this .zip
  2. Mount your device as USB storage and throw the zip file into the root folder (the main one)
  3. Boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery
    • From command prompt: adb reboot recovery
    • Most ROMs: hold down the power button and press “Recovery” from the shut down menu
  4. Once in CWM recovery choose to install zip from sdcard
  5. Choose to install the .zip you downloaded in Step 1
  6. Reboot your device! Congratulations!
The first boot up may take a really long time… no worries!
