RIM Cutting 5,000 Jobs, Pushing BB10 to 2013

Research in Motion just announced its fiscal first quarter results for 2012. RIM announced a $-0.37 net loss per share, more than the estimates of a $-0.01 net loss per share. Revenues for the quarter were $2.8 billion, while the Wall Street estimated Q1 revenues to be $3.11 billion. The company also reported a net loss of $518 million.

The company said it shipped 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones during Q1 and 260,00 BlackBerry PlayBooks. One thing to note is that shipments are not sales, but rather devices shipped to retailers. We don’t know how many devices RIM sold, as there could be millions sitting on store shelves.

RIM also stated that it will be cutting 5,000 jobs this year.

Finally, RIM will be pushing its BlackBerry 10 launch back until 2013. The OS was originally slated to launch later this year, before the holiday season.

The company says it expects the ”next several quarters to continue to be very challenging,” due to the “increasing competitive environment.” Due to the Blackberry 10 delay, RIM says it will ”continue to aggressively drive sales of BlackBerry 7 handheld devices.”

  1. Does RIM honestly expect to survive until 2013 without releasing any new devices? I thought that they were really, really pushing their luck as it was, but this just makes me amazed at the incompetence of their leadership.
