Back in December, HP announced its plans to open source webOS. Now, HP has given us a timeline of the major milestones for the Open webOS Project. As part of its first step, and available now, we have the Enyo 2.0 and Enyo source code release under the Apache v2 License. For those unfamiliar with Enyo, it is the underlying application framework for webOS 3.0, which debuted on the HP TouchPad.

Several other major releases are set to occur between now and September, culminating in the full source code release. The specific licenses for the subsequent releases are as of yet unknown. As cool as this is, this still doesn’t answer the question of whether yet another open source mobile operating system is truly needed. That said, this is sure to be delightful news for folks content with HP’s abandoned baby!
