iOS Software Chief Eddy Cue Suggested a 7-inch iPad in 2011

We’ve all heard the rumors of a 7.85-inch iPad Mini, but with the ongoing Samsung trial, we’ve learned a little more about Apple’s affair with the device. According to an internal email released during the trial, iOS software chief Eddy Cue first suggested that Apple make a 7-inch tablet in January of 2011. “I believe there will be a 7-inch market and we should do one,” he said. What’s more interesting is that Steve Jobs seemed “receptive” of the idea. Publicly, Jobs had always been strongly against the 7-inch form factor.
CNET posted the full email Cue sent to his Apple colleagues. In the email, he references a GigaOm article in which the author wrote about leaving the iPad for Galaxy Tab because of the size.
Having used a Samsung Galaxy, I tend to agree with many of the comments below (except moving off the iPad). I believe there will be a 7″ market and we should do one. I expressed this to Steve several times since Thanksgiving and he seemed very receptive the last time. I found email, books, facebook and video very compelling on a 7″. Web browsing is definitely the weakest point, but still usable.”
What do you think about a 7-inch iPad? Should Apple have released one last year?
