How To: PermaRoot and Unlock Your myTouch 4G

Filed under Guides by Korey Nicholson on December 3, 2010 at 12:01 PM

Thanks to xda members, grankin01 and Scotty2 everyone can now fully unlock and root their myTouch 4G. This guide will help you get rooted and get S=OFF for radio and hboot.

You must be rooted using this guide first, also by grankin01: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225

EDIT: grankin01 says you do not need to be rooted before hand! Thank you :)

Now you can follow the following 11 Simple Steps:

Make sure you have visionary installed on your device and download this file:
http://www.mediafire.com/?gzaozcurazidh98
md5sum: 31560b0fc69958c2fbe444ce7a000a39

1. Now unzip the file into your SDK tools directory.

2. Plug your device into your computer.

3. Now open explorer and hold down shift at same time you right mouse click on your SDK tools directory. Select open command window here. If you are in linux (ubuntu) right mouse click on your SDK tools folder, choose actions, and choose open command window(or whatever it’s called). Otherwise, open a command prompt and cd your way to your SDK tools directory.

4. Type “adb push gfree /data/local” and hit enter.

Optionally, you could dl the file to your phone use androzip or something like it to unzip the file and then use root explorer to move all the files to /data/local. This would skip the first 4 steps.

5. Now unplug your device from the computer.

6. Run visionary to gain temp root.

7. Open terminal emulator on your device, type “su”, and hit enter to gain root privileges.

8. Type “cd /data/local” and hit enter.

9. Now type “chmod 777 gfree” and hit enter to make the program executable.

10. Type “./gfree” and hit enter.

11. Wait for the program to finish and then reboot into HBoot to see if S=Off. Also, check your bootloader version. If it says s=off and has bootloader version 0.86.0000 it worked. Congratulations!

WHAT'S HOT

  • Grankin01

You can do this from a virgin device as confirmed by other XDA members. No need to root by the other guide. :D I still haven’t gotten confirmation whether it works pre-OTA or not though.

So you don’t need to be rooted before hand?

  • Grankin01

Nope, several people I was helping that couldn’t get it to root and a few people who never tried before got root with this guide alone. :D

  • EddieKrueger

You DO NOT have to be rooted as the beginning of this article states. Part of the process is using Visionary to temp root which then full roots.

  • Crrbeans

    Holy cow, this worked GREAT!

I tried multiple guides, RAGE method, visionary permroot, and no S-OFF!

but after 5 minutes with this guide, it worked!

    THANK YOU!!!!

I am considering rooting my phone to get rid of the stupid Genius button. I’ve been reading up on root processes and risks and this guide seems the best.

One question that I can’t find an answer to.

If I root my MT4G – per these instructions – will I still receive OTA updates (Gingerbread) from TMo?

  • richie scarfo

Jesus! I tried everything to get root, and just found this site in a comment on another one. This is THE way to root the myTouch 4g! It’s really too bad it’s so hard to find… or maybe our phones are just strange models.

  • networksonic

Thanks for this How-to–tested the unlock using an AT&T sim and can make calls and sms text but no data. Is this because the MyTouch doesn’t support AT&T’s HSPA/UMTS data network? Any ideas appreciated.

  • Poignant

Awesome! It worked on rooting my mytouch where other guides didn’t. : D

But I have a serious question whats the difference between using this sites zip.file download and commands compared to the one originally from xda,
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
I noticed a difference in the links to the mediafire download. And a descrepancy in the commands, this site says at the end of the rooting process, “./gfree” while on xda it says “./gfree -f ”
Should this be a concern? Is there any diffrence in the benefits of using either??

  • Memo

So. tried it but when i get to last step “./gfree” it tells me permission denied…..
    what do I do?

  • Brandon

so i did all this and now i can’t boot my mytouch 4g into hboot.

  • Becca Annabell

I am unable to move my files from sd card to data/locale

I Had the same problem, here is how I solved it. 1-visionary gain temp root. 2- open terminal up again. 3- “su” enter. 4. providing you have done all the steps above previously, “cd /data/local” 5- type “./gfree -f”. Then power off remove battery and re insert battery while holding vol down and power. You will now see s-off. They should have just told people this.

  • Hollingsworth Jason

Now that u have s=off use visionary and select attempt permariot. That will fix your problem.

  • Ldiamond215

I tried downloading straight from the site…followed the directions to a T…. but still it says no such file or directory. Pls help!!

  • Electricalss

I got it to work after 3 days trying, i always got to ./gfree but s=on when i reboot, so I tried ./gfree-f and same s=on, so i tried the same ./gfree – f and it worked. The defference was I put a space before the f.

FINALLY!! I have been trying for the last 2 days to acquire S=off using various methods and guides. I have always followed each guide to the “T” but am always left with S=on. I used this guide and was able to achieve S=off on my mytouch 4g. I still did not have superuser privileges though. Just had to go back into visionary, temp root, then perm root. Now S=off and SU privs.

  • Alizarr

Can’t enter Hboot through powering on and holding the volume down button. Is there something additional I need to install to use it?
