How To: Android 2.2 Captivate

You read the title right. An official Samsung build of Android 2.2 has been leaked for the AT&T Captivate. The leak was released by the famed Captivate ROM maker designgears over at XDA-Developers. You can follow our how-to below to get Android 2.2 on your own Samsung Captivate from AT&T. The update is titled: I897UCJI6. Edit: A newer version, I897UCKB1, has been posted. The updated guide is below the original. Files are updated as of (2/21/2011).

A few notices about the first build release… it looks like release quality stuff and is dated from September 21st. The GPS is working really well so far, we’ll see how that pans out in future tests. The build does include the Android 2.2 JIT compiler which makes the whole phone a lot faster.

Instructions

We are not responsible for broken devices! This update erases everything on your phone, so back up your data!

What you’ll need:

  • If you want the latest version I897UCKB1, scroll down to the “Updated Instructions” below.
  • .exe Odin Flasher file
  • If you haven’t already configured your PC to connect with your Captivate:
    • Samsung Drivers: HERE
    • You may also need the Galaxy S drivers to get USB connectivity to work… 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Android SDK (optional… for “adb”)

Process:

  1. Download the Android 2.2 Froyo update from designgears (the exe Odin flasher)
  2. Make sure your Captivate’s USB cable is plugged into the computer but not the phone.
  3. Open the .exe file on your Windows PC
  4. Put your phone into download mode by turning it off, holding down the volume keys and plugging the phone into your computer with the MicroUSB cord
  5. The .exe from designgears should now recognize your phone.
  6. Click “Start” to begin!
  7. Once it’s done, let it reboot itself up!

Updated Instructions (I897UCKB1)

What you’ll need:

  1. Download the Android 2.2 Froyo update flash file (SGH-I897_I897UCKB1_I897ATTJF6_I897UCKB1_I897UCKB1_UC_ATT.zip)
  2. Make sure your Captivate’s USB cable is plugged into the computer but not the phone.
  3. Open the Odin .exe file on your Windows PC
  4. Extract the update flash file (.zip) from above to a known place on your computer
  5. Click the PDA button in the Odin program and load the I897UCKB1-homeBinary.tar file
  6. Put your phone into download mode by turning it off, holding down the volume keys and plugging the phone into your computer with the microUSB cord
  7. The Odin .exe should now recognize your phone.
  8. Click “Start” to begin!
  9. Once it’s done, let it reboot itself up!

Congratulations! You now have Android 2.2 Froyo on your Captivate!
