How To: Android 2.2 Captivate

Why do I need Odin and the Android SDK? In you instructions they aren’t mentioned. Did I miss something?

Still not clear to me where in the “process” I invoke Odin.exe and/or the SDK.

Sorry to be so obtuse.

1.Download the Android 2.2 Froyo update from designgears (the exe Odin flasher)
2.Make sure your Captivate’s USB cable is plugged into the computer but not the phone.
3.Open the .exe file on your Windows PC
4.Put your phone into download mode by turning it off, holding down the volume keys and plugging the phone into your computer with the MicroUSB cord
5.The .exe from designgears should now recognize your phone.
6.Click “Start” to begin!
Got to here but this is what it says when i press start this is what comes up All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)

Does anyone know if you can load the update.zip file for rooting after doing the update to Android 2.2 or is a newer version of the update.zip file required?

Have you guys tried rebooting your phones?

Hmm I would try to reboot then disconnect phon e from computer. Close and restart odin flasher. Shut down your phone. Hold both volume buttons while you plug your phone into the computer. Odin should now recognize your phone and have a thing that turns yellow. Press start.

I reread everything and my problem was I didnt have the correct drivers, i was downloading the 64 bit but nothing was happening even though I have the 64bit capability..downloaded the 32 bit drivers and wallah odin pick it up and redid everything as it was told..THANKS for your Help!!!!

i already tryed to plug it on the usb holding the volume buttons… the adb shell ( it says it cant reboot )

Got the fresh open odin ready to go from the link. I so desperately would love to get back to the stock ROM. All of a sudden, 2.1 seems just fine. I can wait on 2.2 if I can just get back to a WORKING PHONE.

DO NOT TRY THIS!!!! This simply does_not_work.

I have tried all the directions on XDA with USB cables, ports, different ways of getting into download mode etc etc.

ODIN returns Succeed0 and Fail1 and nothing i do changes that. I have tried two different sources for the file and the same result.

Its a shame none of the “experts” actually thought to test this out before jumping in.

How lung does this process take? I’ve been sitting at file analysis for a while now. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hate to be stupid but I am getting ready to buy the captivate. I have been putting it off hoping for 2.2 to come out but now I hear it will be next year. Do you have to root the phone to do this? That idea makes me really nervous I do not want to brick a new phone at the same time the upgrade to 2.2 seems a big improvement in a lot of ways.

So that I’ve got the same brick as Tony got(phone(!)PC picture only) Aaaa, fcuk, I start to panic.
Please if someone can help me describing what am I have to do step-by-step!(because I’m stupid, sorry) to put everything BACK TO NORMAL! I have now I897UCJF6

I couldn’t put into download mode by pressing those buttons, and it was like this since I bought the phone. The only way i could get this mode is “adb shell”. But now this also not work :(

I’ve got a quick question. I was midway through the download, when some how or another, my captivate lost its connection. Never came unplugged, but Odin said that target was lost. Anyways, I’m pretty sure that Odin wiped all of the original data and didn’t get to put anything else on. I’ve finally figured out how to put it back into download mode after convincing myself it was totally bricked. However, now Odin does not recognize my device. I have the correct drivers installed, but I’m afraid my captivate doesn’t know it’s a captivate anymore. So it can’t communicate with the computer. Hopefully this makes sense. Am I totally screwed?

OK, so i figured it out…you have to make sure you have the updated USB drivers like it says at the top:

What you’ll need:

.exe Odin Flasher file
If you haven’t already configured your PC to connect with your Captivate:
Samsung Drivers: HERE
You may also need the Galaxy S drivers to get USB connectivity to work… 32-bit or 64-bit
Android SDK (optional… for “adb”)

Have anybody been successful using this with Windows 7 running as a Virtual Machine over Parallels on MacOS ?

I have been trying, I can see the device as a modem and all works, but when I try in download mode, it refuses to mount it.

Mine is locked to AT&T, but it is currently rooted and unlocked.

Awesome. Thanks, 2.2 is working great. One question though… The update brought back all the ATT bloatware that I just finished getting rid of. Will the same rooting and super-user tutorials I used for 2.1 work the same on 2.2? Do I need to do it again on this new install?

i have no problem installing the usb drivers for the captivate, and the device mounts properly when booted fully. however, when i boot it to the download screen, all i get is device unrecognized. any ideas?

i want to be back to android 2.1 but i cannot.wat must be i do i have no idea

I followed the instructions, and its now stuck on the downloading screen with the android and the shovel. Odin says “DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET” and has said this for almost an hour now. How long should this process take?

Is my phone gone?

Install worked perfect took me a total of 8 minutes to install and root and apply lag fix (after dowloading all programs and drivers). However i cannot remover att bloat with Titanium Back up. apps states that apk cannot be found…any suggeztions??

I have an unlocked AT&T Samsung captivate bought in the US, do you know if upgrading it to Froyo will lock it ? It currently has Eclair 2.1

Noticed I cant run Storm 8 games anymore… it asks for my username and pw and they dont work…but when I goto storm 8′s forums with the same information I can log in no problem…Never had this problem with 2.1 Eclair

I’m not at all understanding any of this. But I had my sister-in-law do the upgrade last night. Had one or two issues, but it’s done!!! I am sooo happy with the upgrade. Working fine now. What I needed this for was to be able to go into my chatroom in Tinychat. And it works perfectly! Thank you for the great advice

Awesome! 2.2 is great! GPS works much better and I swear I get about 10% more life out of my battery. I have no clue what AT&T is waiting for.

The only issue I’m seeing is my home button doesn’t work as I would expect it to work. Instead it works exactly like the back button. Yes, I’m hitting the correct button.

Every time I try to flash. Which is odd because Odin3 worked perfectly when I flashed stock rom after bricking.

I was wrong. The brightness adjust is still there, it is just a (seemingly to me) little more finicky and not as precise as it was on 2.1

I backed up my apps to my PC and then pushed back onto my phone’s internal SD and then tried using ASTRO FILE MANAGER to Installed the backed up files but I got blocked by AT&T because it considered them 3rd party.

So I have to also go pluck each app that I had from the Android Market all over again. I think it’s ok, the speed and niftiness of Froyo is worth it…..I think. I am still unsuccessful at getting my contacts back, I have no idea what happened…

I’m going to like the Froyo a lot more after I’ve gotten my phone reconfigured the way I like it with all of my contacts back as well…IF I can get my contacts back…I really don’t understand. I guess if I did it all over again I would definitely remove the SIM card first?

Thanks for the instructions KG – I did get a little confussed on the 64 – 32 part. I have xp – Here are the directions for that

If your computer is running Windows XP, do the following:

1.Click Start.

2.Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

•If you don’t see “x64 Edition” listed, then you’re running the 32-bit version of Windows XP.

•If “x64 Edition” is listed under System, you’re running the 64-bit version of Windows XP.

Getting a bit worried…I followed the directions exactly. First time I connected the phone, the MicroSD card was still in the phone, and the phone wouldn’t connect to WinXP correctly. Removed the MicroSD, and the phone connected…but after clicking “Start” on Odin3, it’s not doing anything. It’s stalled with the following in the “message”:

It’s been stuck here for about 10 minutes. I hope it’s safe to disconnect and try again…..

I was able to figure it out, and got my phone updated to Froyo 2.2. The first two Windows XP Machines didn’t want to cooperate, and either wouldn’t recognize the phone when it was in the Download mode, or would fail to copy the OS to the phone (stuck on “File Analysis…”).

The third Windows XP computer that I plugged the phone into worked flawlessly. Update took only a few minutes, and I’m loving the new OS on this phone. Soooo much better than 2.1.

Not sure exactly if it roots the phone…but I can guarantee you that it WILL wipe out all your apps and data. Make sure you have a backup!

One instruction that I think needs to be added to the list is before you shut your phone down to reboot it into download mode, you need to plug the phone into your PC while it is still turned on and set it to launch USB in “Kies (Update Firmware)” mode so that your PC will recognize the device and install the drivers. Also make sure you see the phone in your device manager, and that the device is “working properly” before you proceed to reboot the phone in download mode.

Does 2.2 have an update to sync with microsoft outlook?

so i downloaded everything like it said. i love it but my only issue is that i went into messaging and some how or another lost my android keyboard. now im stuck with the standard samsung keyboard

One thing I do not like: the Music player never remembers where it left off. AT least in eclair if you touch home key during playback and pause it, it will remember where it was in the player and resume. Useful when listening to audio podcasts but have to try to find where it left off now every time. Any thoughts on this little annoying feature change? Thanks for any help.

Nevermind, after install used 1 click root to “unroot” phone. Everything works now.

Hey everyone, there is nothing wrong with the update files. If it is not working on your particular phone then you are doing something wrong. This update is very simple to execute. The only thing I would stress it to back-up your entire phone before you attempt the upgrade. This step came in very handy when it came time to get my contacts back. I used titanium backup which is available and free from the android market, however in order to run titanium backup you will also need busy box which you can also get free from the market. The only issue you might have is that both of these apps require your phone to be rooted. This is a bit of an issue but there are many forums out there than can help you with rooting. This is one of the easiest updates I have ever performed. everything went smooth as silk the first time around. One thing you should do though is reboot after the update. That goes for any update, not just this one.

Hello all, i am currently running eclair 2.1 i rooted and backed all my stuff up with titanium.i also changed db setting so i could install 3rd party apps. I have no problems… i am thinking of doing this but the official froyo is right around the corner. i know this is a little off subject but have a few questions if i lag fixed would i be able to update offically or would i have to flash back to stock with odin then update? and if i do th elag fix would i have to undo that then flash or would odin tak ecare of that as well ???

I really want to do this, how ever, I do not want to loose contacts, or have to go in and reinstall 100+ apps. especially those that I’ve paid for. (can you re download apps from the market that you have previously purchased with out having to buy them again?)
More than the apps, I do not want to have to re input 200+ contacts into my phone! considering these things don’t sync easily with microsoft outlook. When some one comes up with a once click back up (and reload upon updating to froyo) then I’ll be all over these updates.

thank you guys for the awesome update. I did two phones within 10 minutes. I like when things roll smoothly.

Tried it for couple days and had freeze ups, gps did not work any better, possibly worse. Could not run more than 2 apps and would freeze with battery removal to restart. Researched some and found this is probably just a beta release. Took mine back to 2.1 Eclair and could not OTA update for the gps fix. Used Kies Mini to finally get back to a clean 2.1 and all works as before…thankfully. I do NOT recommend updating to this yet…wait for the official release, if ever. USA location here.

Just my 2 cents worth… I tried this after being fed up with dealing with AT&T… so far it works really well, I really cant tell much difference in 2.1 and 2.2 except there is a HOTSPOT now, you have color icons in the system settings and youtube plays in the browser… ive only had it installed a couple of days (02/02/11 update date)but I havent seen any problems… Make sure your drivers are installed and you have the XDA developer rom downloaded when you start, other than that, its almost to easy…. If you decide to try it, Good Luck

Tried it, works! I had to start it a second time, my computer didn’t recognize the port right off, and nothing happened. But after the fact, all is well, it is faster! Thanks for the info, keep up the good work.

Foryo 2.2 was working great but as soon as i upgraded it to latest version but the email client is not workinf to i am flashing it to previous version again

I am trying to update my captivate to the 2.2 and it keeps saying, Firmware: Unregistered device. Anybody have this problem and know how to fix it? Because Samsung dont!!

Worked great!!, odin v 1.0 was a little buggy so i had to use odin v 1.3 everything works great, also no contacts or any other info lost during install. Very pleased. SGH-I 897 ( captivate )

Great posting…Thanks a bunch for putting this online. I tried to use Kies to upgrade to 2.2 from 2.1 on my samsung captivate and forgot to root it initially. So it was missing the update.zip file on /sdcard. Finally with the help of this post, i was able to get 2.2 running. Thanks again! Saved my day….

How do you take a screen shot. I have a Samsung captivate galaxy S that came with froyo on it and can’t figure out how to do screen shot. A website said to hold the back button while hitting home button… did nothing…. another said hold the back button while hitting the power button… that just locks the screen. I did it oneday on accident and now can’t figure out how I did it and want to know. HELP!!
