With carriers globally identifying the many benefits LTE brings to the table, not only with fast data speeds but also voice and SMS over LTE, the struggle has been how to conduct the hand off between those traditional voice-network services to WCDMA or GSM when LTE service is lost while on a call. In what is a huge step for the industry, and ultimately benefits the customer, Ericsson and Qualcomm have initiated the first successful voice handover between LTE and WCDMA. Utilizing the 3GPP-standardized functionality of Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) the two companies were able to demonstrate that this handover would happen seamlessly and automatically during a voice call.

Says Johan Wibergh, Ericsson Head of Business Unit Networks, ”By accomplishing this advanced LTE handover technology together with Qualcomm, we now ensure that operators can meet consumers’ expectations on a high-quality voice over LTE service. Operators will be able to maintain their quality brand for their voice business when they launch voice over LTE.”

This is a huge step in the industry and something that will provide many benefits, namely quality of service, to consumers worldwide. See the Ericsson White Paper: Voice over LTE and read the Press Release below for more explanation of this great technology.
