EDIT: Looks like this is not an official Android 2.2 OTA from Sprint. Some beta testers were given the OTA, but the official broad release is still unavailable. Source: Sprint

We’ve talked about those leaked Android 2.2 builds for the Galaxy S I9000 and even for it’s brother– the AT&T Captivate. But until now, Samsung hasn’t released anything for the Sprint Epic 4G. We are getting word from numerous users that Sprint is in fact now pushing out the official update to Android 2.2 over its update servers. Only some people seem to be receiving the update, so you’ll have to wait patiently if you don’t see a chance to perform a firmware upgrade.

It is become quite clear that Sprint values quick over-the-air updates. When updating the HTC EVO 4G, Sprint memos cited the “competitive reasons” for being the first to launch Android 2.2 updates on devices. Now, Sprint will become the first American carrier to launch Android 2.2 for a Galaxy S series device, passing up AT&T and T-Mobile who both launched the Captivate and Vibrant far before the Epic 4G’s release.

Interestingly enough, the build looks to be Android 2.2.1. This is the first Galaxy S device to see an update to 2.2.1, the Vibrant, Captivate, and GT-I9000 all have received v2.2 leaks.  The codename of the build looks to be DK28. This suggests the build was finalized on November 28th about one week ago. Android 2.2 for the Epic 4G includes a massive list of upgrades to the original 2.1 Eclair software. We’ve made a list of some of the improvements below:

  • Android 2.2 JIT compiler
  • Adobe Flash Player 10.1 compatibility
  • New Android Market with auto-updating
  • Speed improvements
  • Pinch-to-zoom homescreen flyover
  • Improved default keyboard
  • Quick links to “GPS” and “Auto rotation” toggles on notification bar added
  • Slightly different graphics and transitions with app drawer and default icon dock
  • Colored icons in settings
  • GPS improvements
  • Better Exchange support
  • Video records in MP4 format
  • New Search widget
  • New Gmail application

  1. Fuck froyo! I’ve been screwed this long, the update better be Gingerbread! Sick of this shit! I mean, seriously!

  2. The new 2.2 sucks. I want to go back to 2.1 but I don’t know how…. I have to ‘root’ it I heard and its just such an inconvenience. I regret upgrading, the old version was perfect… now I don’t even have an alarm clock.
