AT&T to Discontinue Its 2G Network in 2017

Filed under News by Chance Miller on August 4, 2012 at 8:09 PM

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday, AT&T announced that it will discontinue its EDGE and GSM voice networks by January 1st, 2017. The carrier has already started changing its 2G network in New York City to improve 3G and 4G coverage.

AT&T says almost 12 percent of postpaid customers are still on 2G devices, which it says will decrease over the next four and half years.

AT&T has voiced its capacity problems before, so this, along with obtaining additional spectrum licenses, will help free up network space.

Meh. I’ll just buy a Penta-Band phone and moonlight on T-Mobile’s network, if they’re still around by then.
