Samsung CaptivateSome thought the day would never arrive. AT&T has officially announced a high-end Android device that could very well compete with their exclusive Apple iPhone 4. The Samsung Captivate will be AT&T’s first high-end Android phone. Will they lock it down with no unsigned applications? Time will tell. But, for now, let’s dig deeper into the device itself. The Captivate is the fraternal twin of the Samsung Galaxy S. While they share all the same specifications, its packaged in a different box. The Captivate mimics the Galaxy S’ plasticky-but-sleek style with its full plastic back.

Specifications

  • 4″ Super AMOLED display
  • 1 GHz Hummingbird Processor (1 GHz Cortex A8 by Samsung)
  • 3D Graphics Engine onboard
  • Android 2.1 Eclair
  • 5 megapixel camera w/ auto-focus
  • 720p video recording at 30 fps
  • DLNA connectivity
  • 16 GB Memory
  • Samsung “Smart Life” custom UI
  • Gyroscope w/accelerometer (six-axis motion control)

This superphone looks to match the iPhone 4 in the “coming months” when AT&T lets it off the leash.
