6 Concept Phones That Show Our Mobile Future

Filed under Editorials by Kenneth Pennington on January 29, 2012 at 5:17 AM

Concept phone lurking is a pastime I’ve enjoyed for quite a while. Those of you who share this passion already know about the popular Concept Phones blog, which aggregates the latest and greatest designer inspirations in the mobile world. Some may like the crazier concepts, but I’m drawn to the more realistic bunch.

Whether it’s the iPhone 5 or the next Nexus, concept designers are here to show us the future of mobile. Where are we headed? Check out some of my favorite concepts below.

iPhone SJ

iPhone SJ

The iPhone SJ is Antonio DeRosa‘s vision for Apple’s iOS future. It’s a paper-thin iPhone made from a polycarbonate chassis, a plate glass capacitive screen, and a metallic wraparound. Its buttons are edgier than the iPhone 4′s, and the bezel remains minimized.

According to the designer, the iPhone SJ is a tribute to the late Steve Jobs… loaded with an Apple A6 and 10 megapixel camera.

BlackBerry Concept

There’s no doubt that RIM’s in a funk. A used-to-be inspired company with the best smartphones on the market has fallen prey to years of iPhone-Android abuse. But, John Anastasiadis plans to change all of this with his curvy BlackBerry concepts. In fact, it looks as if this BlackBerry concept already runs the much-anticipated BBX operating system.

With curved and flexible screens breaking into the market, a drastically-curved two-sided screen ain’t too far off.

HTC Screen

HTC Screen

2011 might not have been the most inspired year for HTC, with plenty of copy-cat “same as the last one” phone releases. But, 2012′s a new dawn for the Taiwanese powerhouse. The HTC Screen from Camille Boldt is a 4.7-inch, high-definition, quad-core Tegra 3, Ice Cream Sandwich-laden device with a modern, industrial design. There’s practically no side bezel here, and the faux-brushed-aluminum chassis adds an air of luxury to the concept.

Motorola RAZR 2

Motorola RAZR 2

Late last year, Motorola finally released a device that wowed the masses— the Droid RAZR. With its edgy, modern, sexy design, the RAZR gave the Android 4.0-powered Galaxy Nexus a run for its money on Verizon.

This next-gen RAZR concept by Eric Design features a metallic back-end and dark glass front. It’s even got a standby-mode clock!

Sony Xperia Glass

Sony Xperia Glass

Sony’s new Xperia Glass is an Android-powered, transparency-surrounded Xpera phone with so little bezel, so much screen, and the perfect amount of flashiness. The silicone bottom cap allows users to grip with comfort and ease. [Esato]

Sony Xperia Vita

Since the launch of the Xperia Play, Sony hasn’t yet supplied us with another PSP-like phone. If designer Shaik Imaduddin has anything to say about it, the next Xperia PlayStation phone is almost ready— the Xperia Vita. This one’s got a curvy backside, thin chassis, and full PlayStation control pad built in.
